  5. civilizations. In medieval Europe gardens
  6. were devoted to growing medicinal plants and
  7. herbs but in the 16th century formal
  8. recreational gardens became a feature of
  9. larger town and country houses. The taste for
  10. formality continued into the 19th century,
  11. when a more natural look became fashionable.
  12. Most 18th-century rural workers had vegetable
  13. gardens and the practice was continued
  14. wherever possible in the new industrial
  15. towns. The miniature landscaped garden with
  16. lawns and flowerbeds became a feature of
  17. 20th-century housing estates in Europe and
  18. the USA.
